Why it is laid out this way
- Every chair whose footprint would land on the statue plinth or under an elm is dropped from the field — 36 of them — which is why the count is 984 and not a round thousand.
- The first six rows are the candidates on their own layer, so the marshals can hide the guest field and check only their own block.
- The stage is clear of the north gate's 12′ in-swing, so the procession enters behind the platform party rather than through the audience.
