Cloth size = table size + (2 × drop), worked out separately for the length and the width.
Drop is how far the linen hangs below the table edge. Floor length is not a fixed number — it is the table’s height, which is 30 inches for almost every banquet table and 42 inches for a cocktail highboy. So a 72″ × 30″ table at floor length needs 72 + 60 = 132 inches of length and 30 + 60 = 90 inches of width: a 90″ × 132″ cloth.

Cloth sizes are quoted width × length, the way linen is sold. Tables are quoted length × width, the way tables are sold. That mismatch is the single most common ordering mistake — a 60″ × 102″ is a narrow cloth for a long table, not a 102-inch-wide one.

Rounds are simpler: there are no ends and sides to disagree, so every round cloth hangs level by definition. Diameter plus twice the drop, rounded up to a stock size.

The highboy is the trap. A cocktail table is 42 inches tall, not 30, so a 30-inch top needs a 114-inch round to reach the floor — a bigger cloth than the one on your 60-inch dinner rounds, for a table a third of the size. Order highboy linen off the dinner-table chart and it will finish a foot above the ground.

What the charts do not tell you
Only three stock sizes hang level on a 6-foot table
Run every stock rectangular size against a 72″ × 30″ table and exactly three come out even — the same drop on the ends as on the sides: 54″ × 96″ at 12 inches, 60″ × 102″ at 15 inches, and 90″ × 132″ at the floor. Every other size hangs longer one way than the other.
That is invisible on one table and obvious across a room. Twenty 6-foot tables in a 60″ × 120″ cloth — an 8-foot size, and a common substitution when stock runs short — hang 24 inches at the ends and 15 at the sides. Down a row of tables that reads as a wobble in the hemline, and it is the kind of thing a client notices in photographs without being able to say why.
The classroom tables are worse and nobody warns you: an 18-inch-deep table has no even size at any drop, because linen is not cut for a table that narrow. If the room is seminar sets, either accept the uneven hem or skirt the tables instead.
Custom tables
How to measure for a cloth nobody stocks
For a farm table, a built-in bar or anything the venue made itself, the arithmetic is identical — it is the measuring that goes wrong.
- Measure the top, not the name. “6-foot” farm tables are routinely 68 or 74 inches. Measure length and width in inches.
- Measure the height at the top surface, not the apron or the frame. A thick top on a 29-inch frame is not a 30-inch table, and at floor length that inch shows.
- Decide the drop. Floor length equals the height you just measured. Otherwise 12 inches for a working table, 15 for seated dining.
- Apply the formula to each dimension. Length + (2 × drop) by width + (2 × drop).
- Add nothing for shrinkage unless your linen house says so — most rental stock is pre-shrunk, and a cloth cut long pools on the floor.
Worked example: an 8-foot farm table 40 inches wide and 30 inches high, floor length, needs 96 + 60 = 156 by 40 + 60 = 100 — a 100″ × 156″ cloth, which is cut to order.

Method, and what this does not tell you
Table dimensions are the ones EventDiagram draws with — the same catalog the editor places from, so a 6-foot banquet table is 72 × 30 inches here, on the plan, and in the 3D view. They are the US rental standard.
Stock cloth sizes are the rectangular and round sizes commonly carried by US event linen suppliers: 54″, 60″, 72″, 85″, 90″ and 108″ widths in lengths to 156″, and rounds from 60″ to 132″. Your supplier’s range will differ — check before ordering, particularly for 66″ rounds and anything over 132″.
The calculator picks the smallest stock size that covers the table at your chosen drop, preferring the one that wastes least fabric across both dimensions. It never suggests a cloth too small, so where a table sits between sizes you get the larger one and a longer drop.
What it does not know: your inventory, your supplier’s cut, whether a cloth has been laundered short, or how a particular fabric falls. Heavy fabrics hang closer to the leg and read shorter than the number; light ones flare. And it says nothing about overlays, runners or skirting, which are sized to the look rather than to the table.

A 6-foot rectangular banquet table (72 × 30 inches), with an even 15-inch drop all round. It is the most common linen in the rental trade for exactly that reason. On an 8-foot table the same cloth leaves only 3 inches at the ends, which is not a drop.
How do I calculate tablecloth size?
