How many people can sit at a 60-inch round table? All sizes

A 60-inch round seats 8 comfortably and 10 at most. The place width, elbow room and floor space per seat for every banquet table size, computed to the inch.

A 60-inch round table seats eight people comfortably and ten at most. At eight, each guest gets a 23.6-inch place at the table edge and about 15 inches of clear space between chairs; at ten, the place shrinks to 18.8 inches and the gap between chairs to roughly 8 inches, which is why ten only works with narrow chairs and a stripped-down setting. I’m Daniel Pitner, Director of Sales at EventDiagram, and after twelve-plus years of walking rooms before doors, this is the question I get asked more than any other — usually by someone holding a venue’s capacity chart that says a number the room will not actually hold. So instead of another chart that just says “8–10,” this one shows every standard table at both counts, what each guest physically gets, and how much floor a seat really costs once the chairs and the aisles are in. Every figure is computed, not copied, and the formulas are below so you can check them. Current as of September 8, 2026.

Every banquet table size: comfortable count, maximum count, and what each guest gets

“Place width” is the run of table edge each setting gets. “Elbow room” is the clear gap between neighbouring chairs measured at the seat line, 11 inches back from the table edge, assuming an 18-inch-wide padded banquet chair. Chiavari chairs are narrower (about 17 inches), which adds an inch and change to every elbow-room figure and is the honest reason ten on a 60 works at a wedding with Chiavaris and does not at a corporate dinner with padded stackers.

Notice that the maximum column lands on the same 18.8-inch place for every round. That is not a coincidence: 18.8 inches is roughly the width of a charger plus a napkin, and it is the point past which settings physically overlap. Every venue that publishes “60-inch: 10, 72-inch: 12” is publishing that same limit whether they know it or not.

Where these numbers come from, so you can check them

Three formulas, and the constants our own diagramming engine draws with. I am showing the working because a capacity figure you cannot verify is just somebody’s opinion.

  1. Place width at the edge = table circumference ÷ seats. A 60-inch round has a circumference of 188.5 inches (π × 60), so eight places are 23.6 inches each and ten are 18.8.
  2. Chair pitch at the seat line. Chairs do not sit on the table edge; the centre of a pulled-in chair is about 11 inches out from it (0.95 ft in our engine). The seat line of a 60-inch round is therefore a circle 82.8 inches across, 260 inches around, which gives 32.5 inches per chair at eight and 26.0 at ten. Subtract the chair width — 18 inches for a padded banquet chair, 16.8 for a Chiavari — and you have the elbow room in the table above.
  3. Footprint with chairs pulled = table dimension + 2 × 2.3 ft. The 2.3 feet (27.6 inches) is the chair pull: the chair, a guest sitting back in it, and enough behind them for someone to squeeze past. A 60-inch round is a five-foot circle on the rental order and a 9 ft 7 in square on the floor.

Those three constants — the 0.95-foot seat line, the 2.3-foot chair pull, and a 5-foot clear aisle around the perimeter of the room — are the ones EventDiagram uses when it places chairs and fills a room, so the numbers on this page are the numbers the capacity calculator will give you for the same table. If you use different chairs or a tighter pull, the arithmetic above still works; just swap the figure.

Eight or ten on a 60-inch round: the honest answer

Ten fits. Ten is not comfortable. The difference is about 4.8 inches of place width and 6.5 inches of elbow room per guest, and you feel every one of them for a three-hour dinner. A standard setting with a charger, bread plate and two glasses wants roughly 24 inches; at 18.8 the bread plate goes, the glasses crowd the centre, and servers reach between shoulders that are nearly touching. In my experience the ten-top promise almost always starts on the sales side, when the guest count comes in one table over what the room holds at eight and nobody wants to say so. If you have to seat ten, use Chiavaris or another narrow armless chair, drop the charger, and put the tens along the walls where the chairs on the outside can push back further. Better still, move one table’s worth of guests to a 72-inch round at ten — same 18.8-inch place as the 60 at ten, but 22.6 inches at its comfortable count of ten, which is the single most useful swap in the table above.

The floor, not the table: square feet per seat once chairs and aisles are in

The table you rent is the smallest number in this whole calculation. What a seat actually costs is the table, plus the chair pull all round, plus its share of the gap to the next table. Here is that figure for every table at a 4-foot gap, which is the minimum our plan check will accept between chair backs before it flags the room as packed, and the spacing most banquet captains would call tight but workable.

Two things to take from that. First, the famous “10 square feet per person” rule is not a planning number, it is a warning floor: nothing in the table gets anywhere near it, and the tightest realistic pack (72-inch rounds at twelve) is still 17.8. The building code figure is closer to reality: the International Building Code (Table 1004.5) sets the occupant load for unconcentrated assembly — tables and chairs — at 15 net square feet per person, 7 for chairs only, and 5 for standing. Your local fire marshal has the final word on the room, but it is worth knowing that a well-planned banquet set sits above that floor on its own. Second, the difference between comfortable and maximum is about 4 to 5 square feet a seat, every seat. On a 200-guest dinner that is a thousand square feet, roughly a 30-by-30 dance floor, which is exactly the trade you are making when you go to tens.

Worked example: a 50 by 80 foot ballroom

Four thousand square feet, no columns, a 5-foot clear aisle kept round the perimeter. Fill it with 60-inch rounds at the spacing our Auto-Fill uses by default, 5 feet between rows and 1 foot between chair backs along a row (which stagger into a classic banquet pack), and you get three columns by five rows: 15 tables, 120 seats at eight, 150 at ten. Across the whole room that is 33 and 27 square feet per seat, well above the block figures in the last table because the perimeter aisle is doing its share. Switch to 72-inch rounds at the same spacing and the deeper footprint costs you a row: 12 tables, 120 at ten, 144 at twelve. Tighten the 72s to a uniform 4-foot gap and the row comes back: 15 tables, 150 at ten, 180 at twelve. That last number, 180, is the one that ends up on the venue’s capacity chart, and now you know what it assumes: the biggest tables, the maximum chairs, the minimum gap, and not a single square foot for a dance floor, a stage, a buffet, or a bar.

The same arithmetic on other common rooms, 60-inch rounds at eight and ten, default spacing:

Notice how much the room’s proportions matter: the 40 by 60 room seats 48 at eight because only two columns fit across 40 feet once the perimeter aisle is taken, not because 2,400 square feet is small. This is the part that a square-footage rule of thumb can never see, and the part that a to-scale drawing shows in seconds. It is also why I would always ask a venue for the room dimensions, not just its area, before quoting a guest count. Under a tent the same arithmetic runs with no walls to hide behind; I have worked every standard top through it in tent layouts by size. And if the question is not how many rounds fit but whether rounds are the right set at all, I have since put this same 50 by 80 room through every other setup — theater, classroom, cabaret, U-shape and the rest — in event seating styles, which lands on the same 15 tables and 120 seats by a completely separate route.

Rectangles: why long tables feel tighter than rounds at the same count

On a 6-foot banquet table with three guests a side, each place is 24 inches, which sounds generous next to the 23.6 on a 60-inch round at eight. But the chairs on a straight edge sit shoulder to shoulder in a line, so with 18-inch chairs the gap between them is only 6 inches, versus 14.5 on the round, where the circle fans the chairs apart at the seat line. That is the geometry behind the feeling everyone knows: long tables are intimate on the invitation and cramped in the chair. Four a side on a 6-footer (18 inches a place) is a kids’ table or a working lunch, not a dinner. The two end seats on a 30-inch-wide banquet table are genuinely comfortable and are the right way to get to eight; a 40-inch farm table adds room across the table, not along it, so its counts are the same as a banquet table of the same length. Pushed end to end into a king’s table, two 8-footers give 16 feet of edge, which is 16 guests at 24 inches plus two ends.

Cocktail tables and standing receptions

A 30-inch cocktail table takes four stools at a pinch (23.6-inch places, the same limit as a 60 at eight) and is pleasant with two. A 30-inch highboy is a standing table for three or four. For the room as a whole, code allows 5 net square feet per standing person; for a reception where people actually circulate with a drink, I plan 6 to 8, and I count the bar queue as its own footprint, because it always is one.

The mistakes I keep seeing

  • Counting tables instead of floor. Fifteen 60-inch rounds are not fifteen 5-foot circles; they are fifteen 9 ft 7 in squares, which is why the room that “obviously” holds twenty of them holds fifteen.
  • Forgetting what else is in the room. A 20 by 20 dance floor is 400 square feet, which at 23 square feet a seat is two tables you no longer have. Stages, buffets, bars and the DJ each take theirs before the first guest is seated.
  • Three-foot service aisles. Servers carrying trays past chairs that are pulled out need 4 to 5 feet between chair backs, and a wheelchair-accessible route needs 36 inches clear at its narrowest point with nothing pulled into it.
  • Believing the capacity chart. It is a maximum, built from the largest table at the most chairs at the tightest gap. Ask which table size and which chair count it assumes; the answer is usually “72s at twelve,” and the guests will be sitting in 7 inches of elbow room.
  • Sizing the tables before the guest list. Groups of ten force 72s; families of six or seven waste them. Match the table to the parties you actually have and the room gets bigger.
